Dredd the fascist? Part 2.

We continue with the analysis of Judge Dredd and the Judge system.

When they raid the Clan drug den Dredd refuses to shoot Kay on the basis of Anderson’s suspicion.

He demands a confession but Kay obviously won’t give him one so…Dredd.2012.kay2.jpg

… Dredd takes him in for interrogation.Dredd.2012.kay3.jpg

If Dredd really was just a murdering fascist he would have no issues with just executing Kay and lying about his confession.

I see no evidence that Dredd is wearing something like a body-cam or a microphone through which his superiors can know what is he doing out in the field.  Which raises the question: How do senior Judge officials know what a street Judge does ? He or she could be killing people for no reason and then falsifying the report. The street Judges could be involved in covering up crime or even committing one. This is exactly what happens in the movie with 4 corrupt Judges. Just how many corrupt judges are there? More about that in a later post.

When his access to the hospital on the 25th floor of “Peach Trees” is blocked by about 10 criminals he gives them a chance to walk away.Dredd.2012.lethalforce.jpg

Dredd.2012.lethalforce2Instead of just gunning them down in cold blood Dredd gives them an opportunity to live. It is the criminals own fault for not listening Dredd.

One of the criminals is executed by Anderson. His crime was attempted murder of a Judge.

In the movie he is presented, at least at first, as a willing participant in the Clan activities.

He is seen pushing another clan member.Dredd.2012.clanmeber 1.jpg

He is the one that points one where the Judges are….Dredd.2012.clanmember 2.jpg

… and then points his weapon at their direction. Dredd.2012.clammember 3.jpg So in the movie he is an obvious bad guy.

However the original script has a much more positive view of him.

Later we see his wife in their apartment which  humanizes him, but not as much as the original script. My belief is that the criminals were made less sympathetic and Dredd less ruthless because otherwise the audience might sympathise more with criminals and less with Dredd.

The analysis of Dredd continues on…
