Conan’s journey – Part 7.

Conan and Subotai travel a large distance..

 

… and eventually they arrive to a town. This Conan’s first encounter with a town.

As we can see the city is in a somewhat run-down state. Also check out the serpent tower on the left. As we find out later this is a temple of Thulsa’s cult.

 

The pair of thieves travel to another town…

…and one of most prominent buildings is, yet again, a snake-cult tower.

 

Cities in Conan’s universe are not presented as nice or clean. Instead they are shown to be a den of vice and filth. They are a place for beggars, suspicious street vendors, whores, thieves and murderous cults.

 

We also learn more about Thulsa’s cult. We already knew they were a bunch of murdering raiders, but now we find out that their influence has spread quite a bit.

 

It is in the second town that they meet Valeria. Just like them she decided to break into the snake-tower. The trio’s raid on the snake tower will be analysed in the next post.

Conan’s journey – Part 6.

Apparently the first thing that Conan does after finding the sword is to hunt down the dogs that chased him to the tomb where he was reborn. He skins them and wears their hides.

 

Meeting the witch

Then he encounters the witch.

 

Conan describes the sign that Thulsa and his men had and the witch tells him to go to Zamora. This is the first time a city is mentioned in “Conan the Barbarian”. Already at this point the cities are hinted to be a place of danger. More about cities in “Conan” in the next post.

Meeting Subotai

 

Conan meets Subotai and they have a discussion about gods. We learn that Conan is still obsessed with the “Riddle of steel”. At this point he doesn’t know the answer to it.
